This is a series of short stories into stories about the Old New York aristocracy. They range from a tale about an artistic young man who was intimidated by his tyrannical father to a young woman who gave birth to an illegitimate child and had to watch her little girl grow up without revealing her parentage. I enjoyed each of the four stories that Edith Wharton included in this book. I really think Mrs. Wharton was a better short story writer than a novelist. It was much better than The House of Mirth.
