I have never read a book by Robert Barnard before. This book starts at a romance novelists' conference in Norway. The beginning part of the book describing the different writers and their foibles was amusing. When one of the authors is murdered, then the story becomes boring. The story-line was convoluted, confusing, completely unrealistic and ultimately unfulfilling.
I'm not sure that I will read another book by Barnard. I did not feel that the Scotland Yard detective was fleshed-out sufficiently. I knew very little about his sister, his wife or his son. The one thing that I learned about the detective was his willingness to be unfaithful to his wife. Not the most appealing characteristic to remember about a fictional character.
